Resident Evil:Afterlife
You will wish you were entering the afterlife after seeing this film. Hands down it takes the record for the worst film I have seen in at least the last 5 years. At LEAST. How can I count the ways this film blew? One by one I guess.
General Plot: Shit. Pure and utter shit. I loved Resident Evil 3, and the video games are great but holy crap it did not translate well onto film. There are so many physical impossibilities and spotty camera work/special effects it would take a bible-length post to relay it.
Shawn Roberts: I haven’t seen him in any other roles so maybe usually he’s a brilliant actor, but man he’s the most terrible tough guy ever. No one who looks like a Ken doll can be tough, sorry. Also, where did the red eyes come from? WHERE?!?!?
Wentworth Miller: AKA… dude from prison break. Why, oh why, do you know how to break in and out of prisons in every role you play? Seriously. But I have to say he is sexy as all hell so at least he provided the viewer with eye candy. Though I think had he been shirtless or semi-nude in someway it may have salvaged some aspect of this horrific film.
Ending: I won’t give it away, but I assure you there is very little to give away. The characters seem “shocked” at all the pretty much inevitable events which is annoying at best. And there is room for a sequel. God I hope that room is filled with concrete and sinks to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
In conclusion, if you want to see a truly crap film and waste your money, this is the film for you. If you go into the movie expecting crap you won’t be disappointed.
Back to Life…Back to Afghanistan
So I’ve gotten a few messages wondering why I have been so quite the last year and also, more interestingly, why I never talk about modern warfare. To answer the first question, I was working on my masters until Sept 2009 which I’ve since completed then life got a little hectic and crazy so I shirked my blogging schedule. You can see I have two previous promises to return, but I assure you this one here is legit.
Now on to the more interesting second question as to why I don’t comment on modern warfare. We’re talking the real wars going on around the globe folks, not the video game (which I love). To be honest I didn’t intentionally dodge the subject, it is just something that always left me torn. There exists within my person a pacifistic side which detests war and all things of war, however there is also an aggressive side that seeks justice, freedom, and equality at a cost. That’s where I get stuck, what cost? When do I sit down and say that yes, this cause is worth killing for, this belief is worthy of the lives of soldiers, of people I love and might have loved, and innocent victims? It’s a question I think many people struggle with and I’m not sure anyone can answer.
I could go on philosophizing about it for a lifetime and I’m sure I will. My ideas will change as life and the world does, but for now I live by the words of Winston Churchill who in 1940 said the Great Britain’s policy was ” … to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime.” I don’t know if we are facing the worst menace to human rights the world has ever known, after all, one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. What I do know in my heart however is that a freedom fighter, a hero for a worthy cause never oppresses people in the first instance. Heroes do not stand and the heads of the people, they’re lifted on their shoulders. So I will talk about this war from now on. I’m always up for intelligent, lively debate on all topics, so fire away (no pun intended).

Rape used as political tool in Zimbabwe
IHT reports today on the use of rape as a tool for political intimidation in Zimbabwe. The report is based off of the research into the matter being conducted by the organisation AIDS-Free World. The organisation cites that 53 women and young girls, with ages ranging from 13 to 60, have stepped forward to document their cases so far . The organisation has reason to believe this number is much larger. Please do your part in helping bring attention to this horrible reality- contact your MP, TD, senator, or other government representative and ask them to take a stand on this issue.

Sinn Féin Surplus
Today BBC reports on Sinn Féin’s balance sheet surplus. The political party is cited as being one of the fiscally healthiest among the major parties. The surplus, which can be attributed to good accounting and an influx of donations from members has been well-managed, and the group will continue the fiscal year in the green. You can read their original statement of account here if you’re wondering where the money you donate is going to. If you’ve donated to a different political party you can also read their reports.

Iran’s Mass Execution
This Sunday Iran held a mass execution of 29 criminals. Iran ranks second in the world for its number of executions: second only to China. The Defenders of Human Rights Centre states “…the hanged men were deprived of a fair judicial procedure…”and were basic human rights. The hangings took place behind the walls of Tehran’s Evin prison at 5:10 am. While the Iranian government states the criminals were fairly judged and the punishment was commiserate to their crime, human rights organisations remain sceptical.

Northern Ireland in Photos-Derry Edition
I went to Ireland and Northern Ireland in March but the idea to actually post some photographs just dawned on me. This is not the entirety of my collection, so if you are looking for some particular photo of a mural, etc. do let me know and I will see if I have one. The photos I will post can be used by others, but please ask permission or cite me as a source if you do use them. Thanks, and I hope you enjoy them! I’ll try to make a general view photo album on some service at some point as well for easier access.
Here is the first few I will post: we’ll call it the Derry Edition.
