Back to Life…Back to Afghanistan

Posted in Afghanistan by lxpoetess on September 22, 2010

So I’ve gotten a few messages wondering why I have been so quite the last year and also, more interestingly, why I never talk about modern warfare. To answer the first question, I was working on my masters until Sept 2009 which I’ve since completed then life got a little hectic and crazy so I shirked my blogging schedule. You can see I have two previous promises to return, but I assure you this one here is legit.

Now on to the more interesting second question as to why I don’t comment on modern warfare. We’re talking the real wars going on around the globe folks, not the video game (which I love). To be honest I didn’t intentionally dodge the subject, it is just something that always  left me torn. There exists within my person a pacifistic side which detests war and all things of war, however there is also an aggressive side that seeks justice, freedom, and equality at a cost. That’s where I get stuck, what cost? When do I sit down and say that yes, this cause is worth killing for, this belief is worthy of the lives of soldiers, of people I love and might have loved, and  innocent victims? It’s a question I think many people struggle with and I’m not sure anyone can answer.

I could go on philosophizing about it for a lifetime and I’m sure I will. My ideas will change as life and the world does, but for now I live by the words of Winston Churchill who in 1940  said the Great Britain’s policy was ” … to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime.” I don’t know if we are facing the worst menace to human rights the world has ever known, after all, one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. What I do know in my heart however is that a freedom fighter, a hero for a worthy cause never oppresses people in the first instance. Heroes do not stand and the  heads of the people, they’re lifted on their shoulders. So I will talk about this war from now on. I’m always up for intelligent, lively debate on all topics, so fire away (no pun intended).
